The leader made $188K. Their copiers lost $25K. Same trades, opposite results

The ROI on a copy-trading leaderboard is the leader's own account. We put it next to what copiers actually made over the same period.

The biggest number on any copy-trading leaderboard is the leader’s ROI. +432%. +3,000%. But that number is the leader’s own account. What copiers actually got is written in a different column.

We put the two columns side by side, using public data from a major exchange.

In one line

The leaders made money. Over the same period, the people copying the same trades lost money.

Same period: leader PnL vs copier PnL

Three leaders

Leader D — 17 days in. Trades essentially one market, ETH, with an 84% win rate. The leader’s account made +$188K (+432%) in 30 days. Add up everyone who copied this leader over the same period: −$25K. Even the last 7 days alone: leader +$55K, copiers −$25K. Same week, opposite signs. 82 people copied; 23 remain.

Leader E — 19 days in. Over 30 days the leader made +$124K; copiers −$62K. ROI peaked at +118%, then slid to +39% in the last 7 days, during which the leader’s account gave back about $200K. 1,211 people came through; 319 remain.

Leader F — this one has been leading for over two years. 180-day ROI: +75%. Yet of the 95 people who ever copied, zero remain, and copier PnL is negative in total.

Why this happens

Public data shows outcomes, not reasons. These are the common reasons behind outcomes like these.

  1. People join after the run-up. They see a huge ROI and follow. Join near the peak, like Leader E, and the gains before you arrived were never yours — only the giveback is.
  2. Same trades, different accounts. Leader D’s account is over $150K. The same 10–25x position survives a swing in a large account; in a small account, the same swing hits liquidation or the copier’s own stop setting first. The leader rides it out and recovers. The copier is already out.
  3. People leave during the drawdown. Even a long-running leader like F keeps copiers only until the flat or losing stretch. The leader stays for the recovery; the copier locks in the loss and leaves.
  4. Fills arrive a little late. Copier orders follow the leader’s. The shorter the leader’s trades, the bigger that gap.

What to check before you copy

  • The copier PnL column, not the leader’s. Match the time window. If the signs are opposite, the leader’s profit is not yours.
  • Total copiers vs. current copiers. 1,211 in, 319 left means most people left disappointed.
  • Leader account size and leverage. A large account can absorb what a small one copying the same leverage cannot.
  • Track record length. At 17 or 19 days, luck and skill look the same.

Now hold us to the same yardstick

Copy trading comes down to one question: when the leader makes money, do the copiers make it too? That question is why we run things this way.

  • BTC, ETH and SOL only. The deepest markets, so a few seconds late still gets the same price.
  • Positions held for days. Not minutes, so fill timing doesn’t change the outcome.
  • Low leverage. Copying with a small account won’t get you liquidated before the leader.
  • Stop loss on every trade. No situation where the leader holds and only copiers get cut. The stop is part of the trade from the start.

And we’ll publish copier PnL as it is. We think we should be judged by what copiers receive, not by the leader’s ROI.

Don’t watch the leader’s ROI. Watch what the copiers made.
